Priya Satalkar has multidisciplinary training in medicine, public health and epidemiology, medical anthropology and bioethics. She is a FWO Sr. Postdoctoral Fellow (Jan 2022-Oct 2024) at the Bioethics Institute Ghent (BIG), Ghent University, Belgium. Her project investigates how Indian women in reproductive age group and significant men in their lives view elective egg freezing as a fertility preservation technology. From Jan 2020 until Dec 2021, Priya was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at BIG and studied decision making process of Indian individuals and couples towards adoption as a pathway to parenthood.
Priya received PhD in Biomedical Ethics at the Institute for Biomedical Ethics (IBMB), University of Basel, Switzerland in February 2016. Her doctoral research investigated ethical challenges of translational biomedical research of cutting edge medical technology such as nanomedicine, with a particular focus on first in human clinical trials. Till Dec 2017, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the IBMB and Basel Institute for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Department of Clinical Research, University Hospital of Basel on research integrity, medical tourism and early discontinuation of investigator initiated clinical trials due to poor recruitment funded through the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences.
With the funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation, she moved to the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine (GHSM) at King's College London (KCL) in Jan 2018. During 18 months postdoctoral mobility fellowship, she investigated the role played by the IVF specialists in urban India to popularize elective egg freezing.
Priya has been an invited member of ethics expert panels to review projects selected for funding under H2020 program of the European Commission. She has a keen interest in science communication. She has participated in a number of public debates organized within the University of Basel and at other universities in Switzerland.
