In the context of globalization and digitalization, this study analyses the literary and artistic creations of Chinese socialist feminism in cyberspace, and explores the unique cultural expressions of the modernity imbalance faced by women in socialist China and the construction of women's subjectivity.
The study focuses on the literary production of Chinese socialist feminism in cyberspace, exploring how it embodies and reflects on women’s subjectivity while exposing the imbalances inherent in Chinese modernity. Imbalances have been defined by the Chinese government in 2017 as contradictions generated by inadequate development and people’s ever-growing needs for a better life. The development of modernity in China is an imbalanced process for it is shaped by the influence of traditional culture and ethical norms, along with the impact of various Western intellectual movements. In this context, supported by new technology, the cyberspace represented by the Internet has become the main field of literary and artistic mass production in China, changing the process of literary creation, distribution and reception. Consequently, the new medium has expanded the boundaries of women's subjective imagination. Moreover, it has reshaped the role of the audience, transforming them into both creators and consumers, thereby fostering a new cultural imagination and historical connection. The expression of Chinese women's destiny in literary fiction in cyberspace serves as a unique case study engaging with multiple dimensions, such as media transformation, technological advancements, capital dynamics, and institutional norms. As such, it becomes a microcosm of the turbulences within social structures and the unbalanced modernity. Moreover, the openness and interactivity of cyberspace endow the creation of works with a public character. As a result, the struggles between city and countryside, government and capital, elites and masses, art and business, and tradition and modernity in these works have become a commentary on the imbalance of women's destiny in contemporary socialist China. By examining how Chinese socialist feminism in the new digital environment realizes women's subjectivity and their dilemmas through innovative forms of literary production, the study explores how these specific sets of cultural practices will respond to the imbalances in Chinese society, thereby engaging with the broader social reality. Through the gender perspective, this study explores the various issues in China's modernization process and the cultural causes behind them, with the goal of reflecting on and advocating for the concept of gender-equal development.
