Abstract

This project aims to chart and trace the dynamics and impact of the neo-avant-garde in Flemish literary magazines (1949-1979).  These magazines are conceived as both a discursive network and an affiliation network. On the one hand, I employ discourse analysis of the metaphors 'adventure' and 'labyrinth' in critical texts to gain insight in the origins, formation and circulation of neo-avant-garde conceptions of literature and corresponding poetic identities.  Special attention is given to the re-appropriation of cultural-political strategies and poetics of international (neo-)avant-gardes. A discourse analysis of these metaphor reveals a complex network of associations within and between periodicals on both a synchronic and diachronic level.  On the other hand, I make use of visual network analysis (VNA) of the periodicals and their contributing poets . The global affiliation network is generated in Gephi and comprises 142 literary periodicals and approximately 3.850 poets who made about 24.000 contributions in total. Through yearly network slices VNA provides a unique and unprecedented overview of the intricate and rapidly evolving landscape of literary periodicals in post-war Flanders.
