Abstract

"Moving with Architecture" examines an ecology of architecture and choreography by approaching their relationality in a horizontal way. The project takes the metaphor of weaving to explore how this ecology contributes to rethinking the relationship of humans to the world. It thereby considers the oeuvre of Brussels-based choreographer Radouan Mriziga (Morocco, 1985), who centers architecture as a main methodology in his choreographic work, as warp thread in its weave. The weft consists of related site-specific choreographic work (esp. Trisha Brown & company), dance exhibitions (esp. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker & Rosas), and architectural work (An Fonteyne & NOAarchitecten). The research weaves 3 research threads with the aim to (1) understand Mriziga’s work and his approach to architecture, (2) conceive of a figure that embodies the architecture-choreography ecology and (3) contribute to broader philosophies concerning society at large. The horizontal interdisciplinarity of the project is ensured by following a methodology that combines a position of researcher-as-dramaturg with performance and architecture philosophy. Approaching architecture and choreography as such provides a potential for rethinking both disciplines, generating a highly nuanced and enriched discourse surrounding site-specificity, bodies in space and even ecological and de-colonial philosophies. Hence, this research intends to contribute to a radical interconnected understanding of moving bodies in space.
