Abstract

Discourses on ageing women are changing from predominantly negative to more positive representations, but this is mainly true for people who fit the narrowly defined narratives of what is considered successful ageing. As these discourses are sexualized and gendered in thoroughly binary ways, it is harder for individuals on the spectrum of queer gender identities and queer sexualities to identify with these narratives of ageing. By taking a critical feminist ethnographic research approach and centralizing 50+ queer women’s sexuality-assemblages, this research aims to deconstruct dominant understandings of the “the good later life” and to (re)construct inclusive and affirmative narratives of ageing.
