I completed my academic education at the University of Milan (2015 Bachelor; 2017 Master; 2021 PhD). I was a researcher at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna (2021–2), a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Linguistics, Ghent University (2022), a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, University of Oxford, and a Supernumerary Fellow at Exeter College. In March 2025, I was a sponsored guest at the Literature Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology thanks to the support of the FWO – Short Study Visit Abroad. From September 2025 to May 2026, I was a Fellow in Byzantine Studies at the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, Harvard University (Washington, DC).

Currently, I am an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology, University of Cologne, and a Research Affiliate at Ghent University, where I collaborate with the Medieval Greek Linguistics research group in the Department of Linguistics. Research

I am a philologist and a literary scholar working on Ancient, Medieval, and Early Modern Greek language and literature. My research explores how the Greek language changed throughout time and how it was taught and used in different contexts. I also investigate when, why, and how (Greek) literature was composed, experienced, used, and transmitted in the premodern world.

My British Academy project continues the research I carried out as a MSCA postdoctoral fellow at UGent. It will result in a multidisciplinary reconsideration of eleventh-century schedography, a method of teaching Greek grammar that significantly impacted text production in Greek for more than five centuries. My research aims to explore the development of and interaction between different forms of the Greek language and their poetics in literary texts. As a research affiliate at Ghent University, I collaborate with the MELA research group in a fruitful exchange of ideas about medieval and early modern Greek.

I have studied Greek poetry from the Hellenistic period to the Renaissance with the aim of comprehending the forms, the contents, and the status of poetry throughout space and time. I have worked on individual poets (from Callimachus to Theodoros Gaza) and works (Ioannes Mauropous’ poetry book and hymns; Ioannes Tzetzes’ Little and Big Iliad, Manuel Philes’ Metaphrasis of the Psalms).

I am one of the coordinators of the Project The Atlas of Human Literatures of the MIT Global Humanities Initiative. In Oxford, I was the Principal Investigator of two projects funded by the John Fell Fund. The TORCH Network Poetry in the Medieval World was a platform to discuss premodern poetry from a global perspective. Euripides Byzantinus explored how Byzantine learned readers understood and modified the text of Euripides.

In Ghent, I am the co-organiser of the Ghent Seminars on the Greek Language with Andrea Cuomo.

Academische achtergrond

Ik voltooide mijn academische opleiding aan de Universiteit van Milaan (bachelor in 2015, master in 2017 en doctoraat in 2021). Vervolgens was ik onderzoeker aan de Oostenrijkse Academie van Wetenschappen in Wenen (2021–2022), Marie Skłodowska-Curie-postdoctoraal onderzoeker aan de Vakgroep Taalkunde van de Universiteit Gent (2022), postdoctoraal onderzoeker van de British Academy aan de Faculteit Middeleeuwse en Moderne Talen van de Universiteit van Oxford en boventallig fellow aan Exeter College. Momenteel ben ik Alexander von Humboldt-onderzoeksfellow aan de afdeling Byzantinistiek en Nieuwgriekse Filologie van de Universiteit van Keulen en als geaffilieerd onderzoeker verbonden aan de Universiteit Gent, waar ik samenwerk met de onderzoeksgroep Middeleeuwse Griekse Taalkunde van de Vakgroep Taalkunde. Onderzoek

Ik ben filoloog en doe onderzoek naar de Oudgriekse, middeleeuws-Griekse en vroegmoderne Griekse taal en literatuur. Mijn onderzoek richt zich op de manier waarop het Grieks door de eeuwen heen veranderde en op hoe de taal in verschillende contexten werd onderwezen en gebruikt. Daarnaast onderzoek ik wanneer, waarom en hoe (Griekse) literatuur in de premoderne wereld tot stand kwam, werd ervaren, gebruikt en overgeleverd.

Mijn huidige hoofdproject zet het onderzoek voort dat ik als MSCA-postdoctoraal onderzoeker aan de Universiteit Gent ben begonnen. Het zal resulteren in een multidisciplinaire herwaardering van de elfde-eeuwse schedografie, een methode voor het onderwijzen van de Griekse grammatica die gedurende meer dan vijf eeuwen een aanzienlijke invloed had op de productie van Griekse teksten. Mijn onderzoek heeft als doel de ontwikkeling van en de wisselwerking tussen verschillende vormen van de Griekse taal en hun poëtica in literaire teksten te bestuderen. Als geaffilieerd onderzoeker aan de Universiteit Gent werk ik samen met de MELA-onderzoeksgroep, in een vruchtbare uitwisseling van ideeën over het middeleeuwse en vroegmoderne Grieks.

Ik heb onderzoek gedaan naar Griekse poëzie van de hellenistische periode tot de renaissance, met als doel de vormen, inhoud en status van poëzie doorheen tijd en ruimte beter te begrijpen. Ik heb daarbij zowel individuele dichters bestudeerd, van Callimachus tot Theodoros Gaza, als specifieke werken, waaronder het poëzieboek en de hymnen van Ioannes Mauropous, de Kleine en Grote Ilias van Ioannes Tzetzes en de Metafrase van de Psalmen van Manuel Philes.
