Abstract

The aim of MEMOR is to:

  1. Make an open access inventory of the human remains from archaeological research in Flanders using various paramaters to give archaeologists, physical anthropologists and other scientists a better understanding of the existing knowledge and research potential.
  2. Research the legal framework and ethical practices in our neighbouring countries and compare them with the current situation in Flanders, in parallel with the mapping of the attitude of the recognized religions and philosophies of life towards human bone material.
  3. Bring together the information: creating a broad-based scientific and ethical framework for dealing with human remains from archaeological excavations based on the inventory and on a dialogue between archaeologists, scientists, ethicists, and representatives of recognized religions and philosophies of life.
  4. Offer a source of information about Flemish collections of human remains, their research potential and legal status, to both professionals and the general public. Communicating the ethical and scientific framework to the intended stakeholders.

Met MEMOR willen we:

  1. Een open access inventaris maken van de menselijke resten uit archeologisch onderzoek in Vlaanderen aan de hand van verschillende paramaters om zo archeologen, fysisch antropologen en andere wetenschappers meer zicht te geven op de bestaande kennis en het onderzoekspotentieel.
  2. Onderzoek doen naar het wettelijke kader en de ethische praktijken in onze buurlanden en deze vergelijken met de huidige situatie in Vlaanderen, parallel aan het in kaart brengen van de houding van de erkende religies en levensbeschouwingen tegenover menselijk botmateriaal.
  3. De informatie samenbrengen: het creëren van een breed gedragen wetenschappelijk en ethisch kader voor de omgang met menselijke resten uit archeologische opgravingen gebaseerd op de inventaris en op een dialoog tussen archeologen, wetenschappers, ethici, en vertegenwoordigers van de erkende religies en levensbeschouwingen.
  4. Een bron van informatie aanbieden over Vlaamse collecties van menselijke resten, hun onderzoekspotentieel en legale status, aan zowel professionelen als aan het grote publiek. Het communiceren van het ethisch en wetenschappelijk handelingskader aan de beoogde doelgroepen.
