Michael Limberger was born in Linz (Austria) in 1966 He studied History and Publicity and Communication at the University of Vienna and followed doctoral studies at the 'European University Institute' Firenze.

He obtained his PhD. at the University of Antwerp - UFSIA with a thesis on Sixteenth-century Antwerp and its rural surroundings. Social and economic changes in the hinterland of a commercial metropolis (ca. 1450- ca. 1570)

He was Teaching assistant and Senior assistant (Doctor-assistent) at the University of Antwerp, Postdoctoral researcher of the Dutch National Organisation for Scientific Research at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) in the framework of the project: 'The metropolis and the state. The autonomy of Amsterdam and Antwerp in a comparative perspective, c. 1530-1830' (under direction of dr. M. 't Hart). (2003-2004), Part-time Assistant Professor at Vesalius College, Vrije Universiteit Brussel for the course on ‘History of Russia and the former Soviet Union’, Lecturer at the Catholic University of Brussels( 2005-2008)

Since 2024 he is Full Professor (hoogleraar) at the History Department at Ghent University (Assistant professor 2008-2013, Associate Professor 2013-2024)
