In the latter half of the 20th century, Dutch authors like Gerard Reve, Frans Kellendonk, Jan Siebelink, and Désanne Van Brederode adopted an idiosyncratic stance towards the Christian tradition. While extensive research has explored how these 20th-century authors relate to Christianity, the position of more recent literature from the Netherlands towards Christianity remains unclear. This project delves into the interaction of contemporary Dutch novels (post-2000) with the Christian tradition. Included in the corpus are novels by authors such as Connie Palmen, Charlotte Mutsaers, Lucas Rijneveld, Franca Treur and Maarten Van der Graaff. The theoretical framework is postsecularism, a paradigm that focuses on how religion has undergone transformation under the influence of modernity. To consider the postsecular condition in which Christian discourse manifests itself, the project examines the intersections within literature between Christianity on the one hand, and gender, sexuality, and cultural identity on the other. Additionally, the project investigates the diverse narrative approaches that authors employ to incorporate the postsecular condition within their novels. An analysis of 21st-century novels, considering both the narrative structure and the postsecular condition in which Christian discourse operates, unveils how the robust tradition of critically engaging with Christianity, prevalent in the latter half of the previous century, continues into the new century.
In de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw stellen Nederlandse auteurs zoals Gerard Reve, Frans Kellendonk, Jan Siebelink en Désanne Van Brederode zich eigenzinnig op tegenover de christelijke traditie. Daar waar vaak al grondig onderzocht is hoe deze 20ste-eeuwse auteurs zich verhouden tot het christendom, blijft het onduidelijk hoe recenter verschenen literatuur uit Nederland zich positioneert tegenover de christelijke traditie. Dit project brengt in beeld hoe Nederlandse romans van de afgelopen decennia (post-2000) omgaan met die traditie. Romans van o.a. Connie Palmen, Charlotte Mutsaers, Lucas Rijneveld, Franca Treur en Maarten Van der Graaff maken delen uit van het corpus. Het theoretische vertrekpunt is het postsecularisme, een paradigma dat aandacht schenkt aan de manieren waarop religie transformeert in de context van de moderniteit. Het project gaat na hoe christelijk discours in dialoog treedt met discoursen over gender, seksualiteit en culturele identiteit. Dergelijke intersecties zijn typisch voor een postseculier tijdperk. Daarnaast focust het op de waaier aan narratieve constellaties die auteurs hanteren om de christelijke traditie, en de postseculiere conditie waarin die zich manifesteert, in te bedden in hun romans. Een lectuur van 21ste-eeuwse romans met aandacht voor zowel de narratieve als postseculiere context waarin christelijk discours functioneert, kan duidelijk maken hoe de afgetekende traditie van kritische omgang met het christendom, zoals we die vinden in de tweede helft van de vorige eeuw, wordt verdergezet in het nieuwe millennium.
