Prof. Dr. Benjamin Biebuyck

Benjamin Biebuyck is Professor of German Literature at Ghent University (Belgium). He studied Germanistik, Anglistik and Literary Theory in Ghent and Basel (Switzerland), and obtained his PhD from Ghent University (in 1996) with a dissertation on metaphor theory and figurativeness in Nietzsche’s Zarathustra. He has been carrying out and supervising research projects on 19th, 20th and 21st century German literature, on literary rhetoric and on philosophical writing (particularly on Nietzsche). He authored Die poietische Metapher. Ein Beitrag zur Theorie der Figürlichkeit (1998), co-authored a monograph on literature and ethics (Negen muzen, tien geboden, 2005), edited the 2019 voume of Rhetorik-Jahrbuch (Rhetorik und Geschichte ), and co-edited Faith and Fiction. Interdisciplinary Studies on the Interplay between Metaphor and Religion (1998) and Der verirrte Kosmopolit. Joseph Roth in den Niederlanden und Belgien (2020). Recent publications include articles in The German Quarterly, Synthesis Philosophica and Cahier voor Literatuurwetenschap. At present, he is Director of Studies in the Arts and Philosophy Faculty of Ghent University.
