Abstract

Nietzsche associated Renaissance culture with force and greatness and saw it as an antidote to the slave morality of Christianity. The Renaissance had recovered the spirit of the Classics and had thus shown the very possibility of cultural rebirth. Observing 19C society, Nietzsche urged a rebirth of not only classical, but also Renaissance culture. He imagined that this renewal would create a new humankand, a 'European man'. The aim of this project is to understand Nietzsche's concept of and discourse on the Renaissance and to explore how he deploys it when imagining his project for a cultural transformation of Europe.
