The OSCAIL project addresses the Anglocentric bias in scholarly communication, which limits access to publications and excludes many researchers from the peer review process. In line with UNESCO’s Open Science principles, OSCAIL promotes linguistic diversity to reach a broader readership.
Bringing together experts in machine translation, natural language processing, translation studies, and scholarly publishing, the project aims to enhance large language model-based translation systems. These systems will be integrated into the Open Journal System (OJS), the world’s most widely used end-to-end scholarly publishing platform for article submission, peer review and production.
OSCAIL will focus on three key use cases: (1) enabling multilingual peer review; (2) improving the electronic discovery of multilingual research through translated metadata; and (3) providing translated, plain-language summaries for non-specialist readers.
The UGent team is involved in evaluating the usability of the automatically translated plain-language summaries.
