Koen Aerts is verantwoordelijk voor de vakdidactiek geschiedenis en cultuurwetenschappen en gespecialiseerd in de sociaalpolitieke en rechtsthistorische geschiedenis van de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de naoorlogse samenleving. Hij besteedt daarbij bijzondere aandacht aan de studie van het collectief geheugen, de methode van de mondelinge geschiedenis en publieksgeschiedenis.
Onderzoek
Op basis van egodocumenten (dagboeken, briefwisseling…) en andere bronnen werkt hij aan een sociaalhistorische mentaliteitsstudie van de Belgische samenleving onder de Duitse bezetting tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Tegelijk focust hij in nieuwe projecten op historische cultuur, met grote belangstelling voor de verbeelding en het gebruik van het (conflict)verleden in onderwijs, media en erfgoed.
Publiekshistorisch engagement
Met productiehuizen, erfgoedinstellingen en -organisaties werkt hij regelmatig samen aan tentoonstellingen, tv- en radioprojecten. Voor de VRT en de RTBF maakte hij ondermeer verschillende documentairereeksen over kinderen van de collaboratie, kinderen van het verzet en – samen met Guinevere Claeys en Johan Faes – over de journalist Johan Anthierens. Hij nam het initiatief voor de Belgische referentiewebsite over WO II (www.belgiumwwii.be – beheerd door het CegeSoma) en bedacht het format van de oorlogscafés en -ateliers (in co-organisatie met het Davidsfonds). Door publiekslezingen over oorlog en herinnering en als scenarist van historische fictieprojecten (film en reeks) probeert hij onderzoek zo breed mogelijk te vertalen.
Academische dienstverlening
Zijn academische dienstverlening knoopt aan bij zijn onderzoeksinteresses, ondermeer als expert Cultureel Erfgoed voor de beoordeling van erkennings- en subsidieaanvragen bij het Departement Cultuur, Jeugd en Media, als coördinator van het Project Oorlogsdagboeken bij Archiefpunt, als lid van de wetenschappelijke raad van het KADOC en van het Museum van de Weerstand in Anderlecht, als lid van de stuurgroep van het postgraduaat ‘Erfgoed en Samenleving’, in het curatorium van de leerstoel ‘Historische cultuur in transitie’, in het Netwerk Verzetsgeschiedenis en in de redactie van Wetenschappelijke Tijdingen.

Koen Aerts est professeur responsable de la didactique de l'histoire et des sciences culturelles, spécialisé dans l'histoire sociopolitique et juridique de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et de la société d'après-guerre. Il accorde une attention particulière à l'étude de la mémoire collective, à la méthode de l'histoire orale et à l'histoire publique.
Recherches
Sur la base de documents personnels (journaux intimes, correspondance…) et d'autres sources, il travaille sur une étude sociohistorique des mentalités de la société belge sous l'occupation allemande pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Parallèlement, il se concentre, dans de nouveaux projets, sur la culture historique, avec un grand intérêt pour l'imaginaire et l'utilisation du passé (conflicteux) dans l'éducation, les médias et le patrimoine.
Engagement en histoire publique
Il collabore régulièrement avec des maisons de production, des institutions patrimoniales et des organisations sur des expositions, des projets télévisuels et radiophoniques. Pour la VRT et la RTBF, il a notamment réalisé plusieurs séries documentaires sur les enfants de la collaboration, les enfants de la résistance, et – avec Guinevere Claeys et Johan Faes – sur le journaliste Johan Anthierens. Il a pris l'initiative du site de référence belge sur la Seconde Guerre mondiale (www.belgiumwwii.be – géré par le CegeSoma) et a conçu le format des cafés et ateliers de la guerre (en co-organisation avec le Davidsfonds). Par des conférences publiques sur la guerre et la mémoire et en tant que scénariste de projets de fiction historique (films et séries), il s'efforce de rendre la recherche aussi accessible que possible.

Ses services académiques sont en lien avec ses intérêts de recherche, notamment en tant qu'expert en patrimoine culturel pour l'évaluation des demandes de reconnaissance et de subvention auprès du Département de la Culture, de la Jeunesse et des Médias, en tant que coordinateur du Projet Journaux Intimes de Guerre chez Archiefpunt, en tant que membre du conseil scientifique du KADOC et du Musée de la Résistance à Anderlecht, en tant que membre du comité de guidance du programme postuniversitaire ‘Patrimoine et Société’, au curatorium de la chaire ‘Culture historique en transition’, dans le Réseau Histoire de la Résistance et au sein du comité de rédaction de Wetenschappelijke Tijdingen.

Koen Aerts is responsible for the didactics of history and cultural sciences and is specialized in the socio-political and legal history of World War II and the post-war society. He pays particular attention to the study of collective memory, the method of oral history, and public history.
Research
Based on ego documents (diaries, correspondence…) and other sources, he works on a socio-historical study of the mentality of Belgian society under German occupation during World War II. Simultaneously, he focuses on historical culture in new projects, with a strong interest in the imagination and use of the (conflict) past in education, media, and heritage.
Public History Engagement
He regularly collaborates with production companies, heritage institutions, and organizations on exhibitions, TV, and radio projects. For VRT and RTBF, he has produced several documentary series on children of collaboration, children of the resistance, and – together with Guinevere Claeys and Johan Faes – on the journalist Johan Anthierens. He initiated the Belgian reference website on WWII (www.belgiumwwii.be – managed by CegeSoma) and conceived the format of war cafés and workshops (in co-organization with Davidsfonds). Through public lectures on war and memory and as a screenwriter for historical fiction projects (films and series), he strives to make research as widely accessible as possible.
Academic Service
His academic service aligns with his research interests, including roles as a Cultural Heritage expert for evaluating recognition and subsidy applications at the Department of Culture, Youth, and Media, as coordinator of the War Diaries Project at Archiefpunt, as a member of the scientific council of KADOC and the Museum of Resistance in Anderlecht, as a member of the steering committee of the postgraduate program ‘Heritage and Society,’ in the curatorium of the chair ‘Historical Culture in Transition,’ in the Resistance History Network, and on the editorial board of Wetenschappelijke Tijdingen.
